See the Yak Yak - Charles Ghigna, Brian Lies

Lexile Level: 10L

See the Yak Yak is a great book for children who are learning about homonyms. This book is a great hook for a lesson before learning about homonyms. The illustrations help beginning readers decode simple text and help children notice the rhymes throughout the book. I would read this in a first grade classroom.

Bully B.E.A.N.S. - Julia Cook

Leveling System and Reading Level: ATOS reading level is 3.6

This book is about a little girl who is getting bullied. Her mother gives her "bullying beans" to eat when she is being bullied to stand up to the bully. She does and gives some to her friends and they stand up to the bully. The bully ask for some and to stand up to her sibling.

I would use this book for the being of school to give the children a good foundation on bullying. I would let them know right away what we are not going to be doing in this classroom.

Where The Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak

Leveling System and Reading level: Lexile AD740L

This book is about a little boy who gets in trouble and is sent to bed without his supper. He drifts off and is in a land full of huge monsters. The little boy becomes their king. When he gets back to reality hes more understanding.

I would use this as a writing prompt for the children. I would use this in a 3rd grade classroom. I would ask the children to write about what they would do if they were in that little boys situation. This would be more of a fun writing prompt.

The Giving Tree - Shel Silverstein

Leveling system and reading level: AR 2.6

This is a book about a little boy who loves a tree and the tree loves him back. The boy grows old and the little boy moves one. When the little boy comes to visit, the tree will give him anything he needs.

i think this would be a great book to use at the beginning of the year to remind the students that sharing is caring. I would also have them write a little blurb about why sharing is important.
